Every year, the RFC hosts Canada Day celebrations for those who drive-in, walk-in, bike-in, fly-in... even sail-in. Get ahead of this exciting day on Canada's 151st birthday by starting with a hearty breakfast (7-11am), visiting our open house pilot booths (in the morning), enjoying a sightseeing ride (museum side)... and much more besides. Pilots flying in with their aircraft get discounted avgas and the breakfast is on us!

Due to circumstances beyond our control, CYRO Runway will be closed on Monday Oct 16, 2017 from 1000-1600 local. Due to a major hangar reorganization at the museum, which will require several aircraft to be parked on our runway. We do not foresee any further delays in re-opening the runway.

Robert Kostecka will present a talk entitled, Discover the A380
The Airbus A380 is the is the world's largest passenger airliner. It is also a very sophisticated aircraft, with a flight deck that incorporates the latest advances in technology. As a professional pilot, Rob has accumulated more than 13000 hrs of flying time - with 4000 hrs PIC on transport category jet aircraft. He holds type ratings on a variety of aircraft including the A320, A330, A340, A380, B757, B767, CRJ, Dash 8 and B-25. Rob is an experienced simulator instructor and has qualified as an Approved Check Pilot (ACP). In 2007, he served as a member of the international team that conducted the Operational Evaluation (OE) of the A380.

The Rockcliffe Flying Club invites you to our fly-in / drive-in / splash-in Canada Day Breakfast. Breakfast served 07:30 – 11:00. $7 for bacon / sausage / eggs / pancakes / beans / OJ / coffee. No landing fees, no day-parking charges. Overnight parking fees waived with fuel purchase.
Splash-in? Yes! RFC has float-plane docks in the Ottawa River, immediately north of the airfield and a three-minute walk (if that) to the field.
Come for the day. Or, fly-in on Friday morning for breakfast, visit CASM for the afternoon, go downtown (apprx 10km) for concerts, events and fireworks – then come back to the field to camp under your wing (no camping fees, and 24hr washroom with hot/cold/flush and shower).

The Canadian Aviation and Space Museum is also on-field - no-charge vans shuttle across the airfield for those who wish to visit the Museum (CASM has NO admission fees on Canada Day!).

The Canada Aviation and Space Museum at Rockcliffe, in Ottawa has a new acquisition. On Tuesday 05 April 2016 the RCAF delivered its last remaining Lockheed CC-130E Hercules to the museum.
This "E" model Herc, serial 130307, was in service for 51 years and accumulated more than 30,000 airframe hours before being retired from the fleet. This particular "E" model was last operated by 424 Transport & Rescue Squadron, based at 8 Wing, CFB Trenton. The "E" model was an upgrade to the previous "B" model, with the additional of more fuel in wing-mounted external tanks for more range.
There are still older "E" model Hercs in service elsewhere in the world and the RCAF continues to operate newer "H" and "J" models, so the Hercules has not disappeared from Canadian skies quite yet.
Hercules 307 is now at the museum at Rockcliffe airport and will be soon displayed there for the public to have a look at.

On 01 July 2015 Canada Day, The Rockcliffe Flying Club will host its Annual Fly-In Breakfast from 0730-1100 hrs. Cost for breakfast is $6.00/per person. This year we are serving pancakes and sausages, baked beans, rolls, coffee, tea and juice. We will be serving bacon and eggs for those who prefer the traditional RFC breakfast.
Sightseeing flights in a Cessna 172 will be available from 0930-1630 for $35/per person. Registration is based at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum. The flights will be based at the RFC. The customers will be shuttled back and forth from the Museum to the RFC.

Join us in Ottawa on Friday, 17 April 2015 to hear from former Concorde pilot John Hutchinson speak about what it was like to fly one of the world’s most famous airliners.
This event is being held at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum starting at 1800 hrs and everyone is welcome.
Following Captain Hutchinson’s speech there will be an informal networking session where pilots can learn more about an organization we recently became affiliated with, the Honourable Company of Air Pilots. This event will be a good opportunity for pilots early in their careers to make contacts with more senior members of our industry.
The Rockcliffe Flying Club's IFR Club continues to meet monthly, giving a forum for the discussion of light aircraft instrument flying.
The IFR Club was started in 2013 and is described in a COPA Flight 8 blog post from then.
Come out and meet some other IFR pilots and discuss the advantages and pitfalls of instrument flying.

The idea of an IFR Club stems from a suggestion from one of our club members. The purpose of the informal meetings is to bring together IFR pilots (or someone thinking about becoming IFR rated) to meet once a month and discuss what they are passionate about….flying! Not just flying BUT “Instrument flying”. Come out and meet experienced IFR pilots and newly rated IFR pilots and have a coffee, relax and enjoy the conversation.

The Canadian Forces and the CASM are holding the annual Battle of Britain Parade on Sunday September 21, 2014. As there is an airshow involved, by TC regulation the Flying Display Area (the area under the flight path of the demonstration aircraft) must be clear of all non-essential individuals.
Accordingly, there will be closures of RFC, Sutton Aviation and the Remote Control Car Club activities. The Rockcliffe Yacht Club is also affected, and have been informed directly by CF.
The parade is being held behind the museum, adjacent to the runway. As in previous years, due to the noise generated by aircraft movements, the airport will be restricted for the duration of the parade. NOTAMs will also be issued.
Schedule for the day, Sunday 21 September 2014:
RFC aircraft rentals and instruction are available Sunday morning (flight complete before 0950, or wheels-up must be before 0950 and return not before 1200).
In the booking system all aircraft have been reserved as unavailable 10:00-12:00; phone dispatch if you wish to book an aircraft to depart before 0950 and return after 1200, and we will unblock the aircraft for you.

For the second consecutive year, the Rockcliffe Flying Club in collaboration with the Canada Aviation and Space Museum and the Ninety-Nines (the international organization of women pilots) will participate in Women of Aviation Worldwide Week from 3-9 March 2014.
This event started in Canada as a grass roots effort to recognize the 100th anniversary of the first woman to obtain a pilot's licence. It has grown significantly in the past few years and now events are held throughout Canada, the US and in many other countries. Last year, the first year RFC participated, we flew over 150 enthusiastic girls and women and won the title of First Runner Up as the most Female Friendly Flight Training Centre in the World!
This year, amongst other activities, we plan to hold a Fly Day on Saturday 8 March 2014 to introduce young girls and women who have never flown in a light aircraft to the joys of aviation. This year's theme is to celebrate 100 years since the first woman learned aerobatics.

On Thursday, 12 December 2013 at 1830 hours, RFC members will have an opportunity to learn about the A380, from a fellow RFC member who flew this remarkable aircraft!
Rob Kostecka was a member of the international team of pilots that participated in the Operational Evaluation (OE) of the A380 in 2007. Rob will be discussing the many technical innovations of this remarkable aircraft and will also be talking about what this enormous aircraft was actually like to fly!
The talk will begin at 1830 hrs on Thursday, 12 December 2013. It will be free for all RFC members and their guests. Please let Brenda Reid know via email if you plan on joining us so we can provide space.
For those who would be interested, pizza will be available before the talk at 1745 hrs. For those who would also like to join us for pizza please let Brenda Reid know via email, so that she can place the order. Please note, if you are joining us for pizza, a $10 contribution will be requested.
The seminar is at RFC for now, but if a large number of people RSVP then it may be moved to the Bush Theatre at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.

Last Saturday, I started my engine. Black smoke then fire appears around the cowling. I continue cranking and the fire stopped. Then, while taxing my turn coordinator stopped working and on take-off my airspeed was showing zero. Then, the vaccum pump and my radio went dead. Landed in Gatineau with no left brake. Took off from Gatineau and my engine quit at 400-500' AGL. Landed at the end of the runway and stopped in the grass. I managed to restart the engine and took off on runway 09 with 10 kts tailwind. Once in the downwind the visibilty went down to 2 miles. I found the downwind for 09 in Rockcliffe (the wind shifts 180 degrees!!). Before turning base, the engine quit, again, landed short of the runway but we walked away.
It was lots of fun, I learned a lot from my instructor in the Red Bird simulator in Rockcliffe.
I plan to do it again!
We are reviving Chapter 5 (Ottawa-Gatineau) of Aerobatics Canada!
We will be holding a meeting during the first week of July at the Rockcliffe Flying Club.

We will be joined by former president and Canadian aerobatic champion Jay Hunt as well as local aerobatic pilot Peter Ashwood-Smith. Many of you have seen Peter fly routines in his Pitts S-1T at Gatineau.
Jay and Peter will give us a brief talk about the benefits of reviving the Chapter, what goes into running one and what we need to do.

There was some confusion last year as to whether the Rockcliffe Flying Club was continuing its tradition of running a Canada Day fly-in or not. Despite the lack of announcements in 2012 the fly-in was held, although attendance by aircraft flying-in was predictably quite light, due to the lack of publicity.
Even though RFC's calender once again doesn't indicate the event exists, there is a volunteer recruitment page for the event and it is mentioned on the club's Facebook page as well, so it seems to be on again this year!

The event will celebrate the achievement of club members over the past year, including licences and ratings earned.

The Ottawa chapter of the 99s, the Rockcliffe Flying Club and the Canada Air and Space Museum are holding a number of activities at the Aviation Museum as part of Worldwide Women in Aviation Week. See the website for more information on this event.
We are hosting a flying event on Saturday March 9th (with a rain date on Sunday March 10th). The objective is to introduce girls/women to their first flight. The flights are provided at no charge to the participant. All flights will depart/arrive on Delta, next to the Museum building.
Rockcliffe instructor Jean Rene de Cotret has already recruited pilots for this event, but we are recruiting volunteers for:
All shifts are for 4 hours (0900-1300, or from 1300-1700). We have listed all shifts for both the primary day (Saturday) and for the rain date (Sunday) – if the event proceeds as planned on Saturday then there will be no shifts on Sunday. If you can volunteer for one day but not the other, no problem, please sign up for what you can.
To indicate your interest in volunteering, sign up on the RFC Volunteer Management System, and indicate the shift of your choice – they are listed under the "Sign Up" tab, under "Girls Day at the Airport and Museum 2013". If you do not yet have an ID in the RFC VMS then you will need to register first at the same link.

On Saturday 02 March 2013, from 0900 – 1100 at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, the Rockcliffe Flying Club will hold a seminar to help you plan your next adventure. The seminar entitled “Planning a Flight to the USA?” will be presented by RFC members Tony Hunt and Chris Hobbs.
Note that RFC members who wish to rent club aircraft for a US flight are required to attend this presentation or a private briefing before a cross-border flight is authorized.
Pilots who have already flown to the US are welcome to join us and share their knowledge. The presentation will be informal, and we will have time for an open discussion of planning tips, destination ideas, and the recommendations of those who have already been.

The Rockcliffe Flying Club has traditionally held a fly-in on Canada Day, July 1, each year, but this year it looks as if it has been cancelled.
The Rockcliffe Flying Club calendar doesn't show the event this year and neither does the club list of flying activities.
I have been to the fly-in the last few years and it doesn't come as a surprise that it does not seem to be on this year. In the past three years it has barely drawn half a dozen aircraft. In 2011 only ten aircraft attended, even though weather conditions were perfect, with a warm, but not hot, sunny day and no significant wind. I think a lot of people have other plans for long weekends in the summer and that the event just petered out from lack of interest.
Update: As described in the comments below it looks like the fly-in is actually "on", it is just that the RFC website has not been updated to reflect that, however it is mentioned on the RFC's Facebook page.
