Full-Scale Cessna Simulator Study: 2018

We have been busy here at the ACE Lab and are about to embark on a new Cessna 172 study. We have added a new feature where pilots will fly with ForeFlight on an iPad for part of the flight. As well, we will be adding a virtual reality-based cognitive health assessment tool that we designed. We are very excited about this study, as it is a big step forward in our plans.

The ACE Lab at Carleton University is looking for participants!

You may participate if you:

• are 18 years or older, and
• have a current permit* or licence (aeroplane), and
• have a current medical certification; and
• have flown as pilot-in-command within the last 24-months
• *students who have solo and cross-country experience may qualify

The study takes place over two sessions at the ACE Lab at Carleton University.

Carleton University General Aviation Study: More Participants Needed

Carleton University is looking for at least 15 more participants for its General Aviation Study!

Who can participate?

Participants should meet the following criteria:

• a pilot or a pilot in training (solo and some cross-country experience)​
• medically licensed to fly
• at least 40 years of age, and
• interested in flying a full-scale Cessna 172 simulator

How long?

Each participant would be asked to come in for two different sessions, each at a maximum of two hours.

When and where?

All sessions will be held at the Carleton University ACE lab, and scheduling is open to the participants​ via ​an easy to use online scheduler​.​

​We are pleased to cover all parking costs while at the university.​

Full-Scale Cessna Simulator Study Seeks Participants

This study will explore cognition and cross-country general aviation flight.

If you are:

• a pilot or a pilot in training;
• medically licensed to fly;
• at least 40 years of age; and
• interested in flying a full-scale Cessna 172 simulator

The study takes place over two sessions at the ACE Lab at Carleton University.

This study is quite different from the last one, so pilots can participate even if they were here before. Participation is completely voluntary. You will not be compensated monetarily or otherwise for participating in this study but parking costs will be paid for by the study.

News from the Carleton ACE Lab

Kathleen Van Benthem, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Carleton University Advanced Cognative Engineering Lab (ACE), who has spoken to COPA Flight 8 in the past, recently send news about the Aging Pilot Study.

The study is complete and four videos have been produced that outline the project and its results.

Van Benthem writes:

It has been a while, but I am finally finished the Cessna study at Carleton U! We were very fortunate in that SmartPilot.ca came out last fall and made some professional videos about the lab and this study (much better than our homemade ones!). Van Benthem also noted that a recent Carleton article has focused on the work done at the ACE lab by several grad students, including the work of Chris Nicholson, a psychology PhD student who is interested in how flight simulator motion affects pilot training.

In that same article Van Benthem summarized the findings of the aging pilot study:

Research at the ACE lab showed that, although older pilots did show poorer results on some aspects of flight performance when compared to younger pilots, some of the effects of age were reduced by having higher levels of expertise. "This emphasizes the need for continued upgrading of skills throughout the pilot lifespan," says Van Benthem.

She also notes: "I am also happy to say that we are working on finding the funding to continue this work, and develop a GA-purposed cognitive health screening tool."

Lecture on the First Human Powered Helicopter

Carleton University's American Helicopter Society (AHS) team are hosting its first AHS event right here on campus! The event will focus on a presentation by the AeroVelo team, who were the first to create a human powered helicopter and get it off the ground. The project was part of the Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter (HPH) Competition.

With no designs being successful during the 33 long years of this competition, AeroVelo was able to achieve and exceed the requirements set by the competition committee which included a one minute hovering time, while keeping a steady altitude of 3 meters to win the $250,000 prize.
