Cheshire Cat Burns

Early on the morning of 28 January 2013 the Ottawa Fire Department were called to fight a fire at the Cheshire Cat Pub and Restaurant and the corner of Carp Road and Richardson Side Road. Ottawa Fire Chief John deHooge described the fire as "stubborn".

Fire crews were on the scene early, but the lack of any fire hydrants nearby the very rural location, slowed fighting the blaze. At least 20 trucks, including tankers, with 50 firefighters attend the scene. The blaze was too hot to fight inside the building, forcing crews to work from the outside.

No one was in the building when the fire broke out and no injuries were reported.

The building was reportedly totally destroyed by the fire. The bell tower on the former rural school building collapsed after the fire had been burning for five hours.

The Cheshire Cat has been a favourite gathering spot for Carp Airport pilots over the years due to its close proximity to the airport and its status as the nearest and best place to eat in the area. Hopefully the pub owners will be able to rebuild their business, but it looks like Carp pilots will have to find a new pub for now!

Not Good

The crash of a light aircraft is never a good thing, but some crashes are worse than others and this one seems to be in that category.

On 4 August 2012 Neil Herland tweeted about the crash of a Zenair CH601XL near Carp Airport and provided some pictures:

The 601 looks pretty badly damaged, but the good news is that reportedly the pilot survived, although there is no information provided about injuries. The crash looks serious enough that injuries would have been likely.

The bad news is that the aircraft was unregistered and thus also presumably uninsured.

Herland reports the aircraft carried the US registration N59PA and a check of Airliners.net confirms that this is the same plane. Airliners.net also notes that the aircraft was imported to Canada in 2011.

A quick check of the FAA aircraft registry shows that the Zenair was stricken from the US registry on 27 July 2011, more than a year before the accident. Running the serial number through the Canadian Civil Aircraft Register shows it wasn't registered here, of course, since it still had its US registration numbers painted on it.

So since it was in Canada over a year there are lots more questions that hopefully Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board will ask, such as whether it had a current annual inspection? Hopefully it will be investigated, as it wasn't listed in the CADORS.

International Pilot Academy to Open This Week

International Pilot Academy, the new flying school located at Carp Airport, is all set to open its doors on Tuesday 10 April 2012, right after the Easter Weekend, according to reports.

As we previously posted IPA's flying operations are based in the Roly Armitage Terminal building at Carp.

The school will commence its first ground school later on in the same week, at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum classroom complex.

IPA's timing looks right as spring is here and summer should be just around the corner, which is the main time for flight training in this part of the world.

Hopefully they will have a busy summer season and lots of great VFR weather to get their new endeavour off the ground.

Touch 'n Go Aviation Warehouse Closed?

There are reports that Touch 'n Go Aviation Warehouse, Carp Airport's pilot supply shop has closed its doors.

One local pilot reported on 10 February 2012 "Was at Carp today and touch n go aviation has gone out of business according to sign on the door".

Indeed their website is returning "The server at www.touchngoaviation.com can't be found because the DNS look-up failed."

Owned by local retailer and pilot Chad Wilton, Touch 'n Go opened to great fanfare on 26 September 2009. Wilton purchased the entire hangar, turned the ground side into the new store and used the rest for aircraft storage.

The store boasted a large square footage of retail space and even a pilot lounge in the back. If indeed the business is closed it leaves a hole in the local aviation community that will be hard to fill.

New Flight School at Carp Airport

We recently discovered that Carp Airport has new flight school, which is just in the process of opening up. International Pilot Academy was quietly announced by the Carp Airport operator West Capital Developments as part of a news release about the Cirrus SR22 demonstration.

The Academy is located in the Carp main terminal building and has a website at www.intlpilotacademy.com. Jules Selwan is the school's President and Operations Manager and Christopher Keep is the Chief Flying Instructor and Person Responsible for Maintenance (PRM). They hold ground school at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum and use the Museum's Redbird simulator.

The Academy is offering training for the Recreational Pilot Permit, Private Pilot Licence airplane, Commercial Pilot Licence airplane, Night Rating, Instrument Rating, Multi Engine Rating and Instructor Rating.

While their flying operations are based at Carp Airport, their administrative office is located at 1427 Ogilvie Road, Suite 102 in Ottawa, Ontario. They are in good company there, in the same building as Farm Boy's corporate headquarters.

Even though they go by the English name International Pilot Academy Transport Canada has them listed as Academie de Pilotage Internationale Inc and they advertise bilingual training.

Transport Canada also indicates that they are starting off with one aircraft, a 1976 model Cessna 150M, C-GPUY, but I imagine their fleet will grow from there over time. Presumably their multi-engine training will be done on a different aircraft.

Of note, C-GPUY is a familiar sight at Carp as it used to belong to the previous flight school based there, Carp Flying Academy, which operated between 21 January 2006 and 18 November 2008 and flew a pair of Diamond DA20-C1 Eclipses in addition to the 150.
