Peterborough Airport Restaurant Closed

By Nancy Hewitt, Peterborough Airport Operations Coordinator

The restaurant operators have closed the Runway 27 Café without notice, as of today, 21 February 2012.

At this time we are unable to determine how long the restaurant will be closed. The City will be assessing the situation and providing a solution as soon as possible.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Kudos to Nancy for giving everyone a heads-up.

We flew into Brantford on Monday for a family pick-up, we arrived at noon, six other aircraft all converging on the circuit, lots of traffic in and out, the clubhouse was full .... but the restaurant was closed for Family Day.

The Flying Club staff was offering visiting pilots a lift down the road to Tim Horton's. (Sigh)

That seems kind of odd to close a restaurant for Family Day when everyone is out flying!

Odd but not surprising. Tim Horton's will "get it" but the small Canadian businesses that need the aviation/pilot market will often miss opportunities like this.

Tony's Mile Hi at RFC is often closed or opens late during the semi-annual "Clean-up Day", or the morning of the AGM, and on long weekends when everyone is at the Club bright and early. 80 potential customers milling around, hungry, and several volunteers doing Tim Horton runs. Opportunity lost.

In the case of the Runway 27 Café at Peterborough I am thinking that there must be a lot more to the story than this. Perhaps business has been poor over the winter, especially with the economy as it is these days.

Update on this from COPA Director Paul Hayes:

Approx. Feb 20 - 21 the restaurant at Peterborough airport had closed quite suddenly.

A follow up with Nancy Hewitt, who works at the airport, confirmed that the closing was quite sudden - a notice was simple pinned on the door.

As an interim measure the airport will be providing coffee and snacks, but hopes to have an interim operator in place within about a week and then will be sending out an RFP for a long term operator.
